For this piece I wanted something tightly controlled, but with a bit of an organic nature to it. Therefore I decided to base it on a strict geometric pattern. The cartoon was created in Adobe Illustrator and is a simple Bézier curve that was placed, copied, then translated.
The cartoon was temporarily taped to the canvas during construction, and used as a guide. On a few occasions the dividing line between the fibers slightly shifted from the template and the variance was visually jarring. This necessitated undoing some of the work to re-tension until it corresponded exactly to the cartoon. In my previous pieces such precision was not a requirement, and in fact any variance added to the piece. With this type of geometric work, however, variance has to be kept to a minimum.
