Instead of using artistic pens (see Fiver Pens Proof One) how about just using a scan of raffia field brought into the digital world, and manipulating it? Will be using the same materials as Raffia Field Two to make comparing the outputs easier.

Each colored raffia field is made by pasting raffia to paper; scanned on the flat-bed; traced in Illustrator (so the result is a set of Béziers that encapsulate a broadly similar region of color from the imported scan).
The result reminds me of a contour map, especially when viewing it in preview mode.
